The single best way to know if a
GWTA Chapter has fun, successful programs, goes on great
rides, participates with other chapters and their community,
and in general has smooth running programs is to see if
they are growing.
If a chapter is growing, that
means that it is serving members well, and other people want
to join in the fun and community of that Chapter.
Net positive growth is a
function of both recruitment and retention. Both are
needed characteristics.
Every organization
continuously needs to keep new members coming in the door,
because every organization needs to replenish membership
that is unable to continue for whatever reason. And
every organization needs the wisdom and experience of
senior, long-term members to best find a path that works
well for everyone.
One of the best ways to
stimulate growth is to set and share a goal with the
membership. Whatever number of members you have,
decide you want 'n' more. Get the membership to buy
into the number (whatever it is), and brainstorm with them
ways to get there. Celebrate mid-term milestones along
the way. Announce every meeting what the membership
number is, and how many more you have to go to reach your
goal. Be creative about ideas to expand. Plan a
'bring a friend' meeting, with prizes for the members that
bring the most, and/or sign up the most. Make an
arrangement with the local motorcycle dealer to leave
literature with every new bike they sell. Always be aware of
members that need attention. And then have a big party
when you reach your goals, too!
For 2005-06, having a Net
Positive Growth is not an absolute requirement for Chapter
Olympics recognition. However, for a Chapter to get
the "Gold" recognition, they must achieve all 16 credits,
including Net Positive Growth.
